Monumental Conflicts of Interest
Can Monument to Afford to Contract a Lawyer with clear conflicts of interest?
Today is the last Friday before the holiday season kicks off and here we are on the verge of another Special Meeting of the newly renamed Town of Monument, Town Council.
What should be a joyous season, I fear we are hours away from the Town Council authorizing a contract with a Lawyer from the Denver Metro Area… (Outside influences anyone?) to conduct a Kangaroo Court investigation of the Town of Monument.
Based on recent events, it is clear that the vote with end with four votes in favor:
Romanello: Yes
Schoening: Yes
Elliott: Yes
Stephens Yes
Neither of those names listed above will be Monument Town Council members going forward, they’re sitting illegally according to many area residents.
The astonishing part is that back in March of 2022, the Lawyer that is being proposed today e-mailed an opinion that he purported to be his own legal opinion to a very public group of people:
The craziest part about all of this:
I am an attorney
I evaluated one of your board members…
I am making a statement about your board member
This is an attorney certified statement
We have clear statement and act from the e-mail address of the law firm for which this attorney works for about one of the board members listed above. To me, this would appear to be a clear violation of Section 1.7 of the Code of Conduct for the Colorado BAR Association. Perhaps I’ve got this wrong, but my gut is telling me there’s an incredible amount of wrong doing here.
We’ve already established that the push for this “investigation” (such as it is) is not based on a valid complaint. We’ve already established that the town has been made whole. We’ve already established the illegitimacy of the current board members beyond November 8th, 2022. How long must this farce continue?
